Kalyani’s Creations aims to bring products which are pivotal to the lifestyle of those from the Indian subcontinent & facilitates a sense of belonging and identity amongst the diaspora.

• We predominantly support indigenous knowledge systems by showcasing textiles of natural fibres, diverse weaving and embroidery techniques and dyeing practices.

• We source our products from suppliers whose production process enriches the lives of women and marginalised artisan communities.

• Our aim is to provide non-catalogued products which are unique and ready to wear in the Australian market.

Owners Profile

​

As an Australian of Bengali-Indian origin, my business profile and practices are guided  by my cultural heritage. Kalyani’s was born during COVID, where I used my experience of being born in one country and migrating to another, to showcase heritage textiles that add meaning to our migrant lives in Australia.

Business Name

​

This family enterprise is inspired by my grandmother whose name was Kalyani. My grandmother was a widow. My recollection of her physical being was that she wore the softest muslin saree (usually white or cream) with a thin black or brown border. She never wore gold, silver or red border sarees or coloured sarees as white and cream were the colours of  widows signifying austerity.  During one of my visits, she gave me her old muslin saree and said I could use it to dry a washed car or separate the whey from paneer. The border of the saree had other uses – it could be used as a rope.

She is no more but was a living example of a survivor. Despite multiple odds in her life ,she remained like her saree – simple and durable, carrying her dignity with herself and repurposing things to give new life.

This page is motivated by that sense of fashion where market forces regulate the availability of an item but drapes do not define your identity. You become trendy not because of what you wear but because of who you are as a person, what you value in life and what gives you joy. The sarees, blouses & dupattas compliment the breathtaking essence of human living!
